Bandwidth Stealers and How to Recover: Belonging Uncertainty
When students are not sure they belong in a class or on campus, they may struggle to be academically successful. There are things we can do in our classrooms and other learning settings to nurture students' sense of belonging.
This course has been developed with Cia Verschelden from the American Association of Colleges and Universities, USA, and it includes short videos, activities, and discussion prompts. It is part of a series on Bandwidth Recovery: Helping Students Reclaim Cognitive Resources. When completed you will:
- Comprehend the concept of belonging uncertainty; students’ bandwidth-depleting experience of feeling like they don’t belong in their classroom or school.
- Understand the potential debilitating effects of feeling like you don’t belong on students’ available cognitive capacity.
- Learn about some dispositions and strategies that will help you create learning environments in which all students feel a sense of belonging in all their identities.
