Small Teaching: Interleaving
Interleaving - the spacing out and mixing up of learning activities over time - promotes long-term knowledge retention. In this course, we look at how you can interleave within a unit of study, across a module and an entire course to maximise impact on student learning.
This course has been developed with Dr Todd D. Zakrajsek from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), USA, and Professor James M. Lang, the author of Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning, speaker, education consultant, USA. The course includes short videos, activities, and discussion prompts. In this course you will learn:
- The value of interleaving and the evidence base for its impact on student learning,
- How to incorporate interleaving into the teaching sessions, both face-to-face and online,
- Principles that you can use to apply and adapt interleaving to your own context.
