Welcome to the ‘Developing a Student Partner Programme at Your Institution’ course, which was developed with Karen Arm from Southampton Solent University, UK. This course has been designed and developed by staff and students from Southampton Solent University’s Partnership Programme. It explores the value and practice of students and staff working in partnership in higher education. We discuss what student-staff partnerships are, the benefits it delivers and some ideas on how to implement them in practice. Drawing on our own experiences, we share examples of what works (and what doesn’t) for those interested in starting an institutional student/staff partnership programme.

Hello, my name’s Dr. Karen Arm and I’m a Senior Lecturer in Learning and Teaching in the Education Office at Southampton Solent University in the UK. Southampton Solent University is a practice-led industry and employment focused-institution on the South Coast of England with inclusive, real world learning and teaching at the heart of its culture. And I have one of the best jobs at the university because I get to work with both staff and students as an educator in learning, teaching, and research. My role involves me teaching staff on the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching, and teaching doctoral students on our Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods. I also lead the Solent Student Partner Programme across institutional partnership initiatives.

“Partnerships is a process, it’s about staff and students working meaningfully together to shape higher education practise, and the benefits are huge. Students gain confidence and skills, educators gain fresh insight and collaboration, and institutions build a culture of innovation and inclusion.”
