Welcome to this course on ‘From Interaction to Engagement: Creating Participation Online’ which has been developed with Lynn Gribble. With more teachers now working online and many students not using their cameras or microphones, teaching risks losing much of the interaction (student-to-student and student-to-staff) previously seen through the rich class-based discussions as well as the impromptu side chats. The loss of the nods, twitches and even phone scrolling is no longer visible and as teachers, we need other means to achieve this. In this course, we explore how you might create an environment that encourages interaction and brings about the behaviour of engagement. By using instant engagement tools that will energise the students and you, you can reduce the isolation of online teaching and create exchanges where everyone can be seen and heard.

Hi, I’m Lynn Gribble from UNSW Sydney. Based in Australia, I’ve been teaching online for about 17 years and my great interest is, how do we bring students into a classroom when they’re online? We want them to have social learning, feel belonging and interact, rather than sitting passively consuming the lecture. In this course, I’m going to explore with you how you can engage your students online. When we move from teaching face-to-face to teaching online, one of the great challenges can be that it doesn’t become a monologue. With students not using things like webcams or microphones, it can feel like you’re teaching to a void.
In this course, I’m going to explore how you can get your students to engage so that they are having a social learning experience with each other, and also that you’re having an experience with them, that you’re getting feedback along the line, and that both of you are able to give feedback on how you’re engaging with the materials, each other, and the learning that’s taking place.
