Hi, my name is Dr. Courtney Plotts. I am the National Chair of an organisation called CASEPS, the Council For At-Risk Student Education and Professional Standards here in the United States. And my area of interest is looking at culture and how it influences learning and best practices that aren’t currently included in best practices that we have and how we can take any type of ethnic culture, any type of academic culture, and really make it robust so that all students can learn.

While some professionals are expert in culturally responsive teaching and design, there are many for whom the concept of cultural responsiveness is relatively new. This course will support educators at any level of their career by providing new ways to apply cultural responsiveness to the design and instructional aspects of a course. In addition, this course will explore ways you can make students feel more comfortable in the learning environment so they can devote more cognitive resources to learning.

The purpose of this course is to make sure that people understand culturally responsive teaching. I think it’s challenging across the globe when we talk about cultural responsiveness, and kind of what that looks like. And for some educators just starting, it seems very nebulous. And for some educators who are right in the middle, and they might want some more. And so this course just looks at a little bit more of a deeper dive on how we can kind of classify culturally responsive teaching, and how it can be most effective in the classroom.

“Culturally responsive teaching is an effective tool for decreasing feelings of isolation, depression, and acculturative stress.”
