Hi, my name is Camilla Roberts, and I’m the Director of the Honor and Integrity System at Kansas State University in the United States. I’ve been in the field of academic integrity for over 13 years. Prior to academic integrity, I worked within student affairs. My background in student affairs led to my interest in meeting with students and looking at their student development and working with them for those who have chosen to do something academically dishonest and helping them see it as a learning experience.

I’ve also been honored to serve as President of the International Center for Academic Integrity for the past two years. It’s also known as ICAI. ICAI’s mission is to help create a culture of academic integrity at educational institutions. We focus on six fundamental values of academic integrity, which are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage, which we’ll discuss more through this course. The first five values are important aspects of integrity, but you have to have that sixth value of courage to really act upon the others.

During this course, my goal is to educate you about why academic integrity is so important in the educational system. But more importantly, why it is important in your individual class. We will explore things that you can do to be very proactive in mitigating academic misconduct, what you should do when a violation occurs, and also what you should do when a violation has happened and what you do afterwards. By the end of the course, you will have some very practical examples of what you can do in your class, and how you can work with your students.

Academic integrity is assuring that the work that students do for an academic assignment is their own, or they give appropriate credit to those who helped him or her. Academic integrity goes beyond the individual student though. A lack of academic integrity reduces the integrity of the grade, degree, or certification a student is working towards. The goal through proactive measures is to ensure students’ authentic learning.

Based on the work from the International Center for Academic Integrity, there are six fundamental values that must be focused on. These values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage. Having educational institutions instil and discuss these values with students helps them in ethical decision making while a student, as well as, after they enter the workforce.

“Engaging in conversations about academic integrity and integrity in general are constant reminders for the students to make the appropriate choice when it comes to their assignments.”
