Design Thinking for Learning Design and Educational Development

In a context of changing student needs and growing expectations of collaboration and innovation, how can co-production and people-centre design improve student experiences in higher education? This webinar explores how a cross-institutional design thinking community at the University of Leeds, UK, has used design thinking to support learning design, educational development, and collaborative innovation across teaching and staff development practice.

Higher education teams are increasingly expected to design engaging, inclusive, and future-focused student facing services and learning experiences. At the same time teams are responding to complex institutional demands, diverse student needs, and evolving expectations around teaching and employability.

This webinar explores how a design thinking approach has been used at the University of Leeds, UK, to facilitate collaborative learning design and academic development. It has been prepared by members of the University of Leeds Design Thinking Community: Barbara Kempf (Academic Development Consultant, Digital Culture and Development), Nancy Davies (Lecturer in Digital Education in Health and Social Care), and Dr Joanna Brown and Sarah Briggs (Senior Learning Technologists). Together, they will showcase how a cross-institutional community has applied design thinking to help staff work together to reframe challenges, generate shared solutions, and develop more innovative approaches to pedagogical research, curriculum, and staff development.

Participants will explore through the lense of design sprints how methods such as empathy-building, reframing, diverge–converge thinking, prototyping, and iteration can strengthen collaboration, belonging, and improve educational practice. The team will share practical design tools and resources developed at the University of Leeds.

Everyone is welcome, cameras on or off. The session will be of particular interest to academic staff, learning designers, educational developers, staff developers, and professional services colleagues involved in curriculum design, teaching enhancement, and staff development in higher education.

This webinar will be recorded. If you're unable to attend the live session, please register anyway to ensure you receive access to the recording afterward.
