Shared Curriculum: Designing for Others to Use

Learn to design shared curriculum that balances institutional requirements with instructor autonomy, creating flexible teaching materials that support both student success and faculty expertise. This course is for instructional designers and faculty who design or redesign courses for others to teach.

This course has been developed with Catrina Mitchum and Shelley Rodrigo. We recommend working through the lessons in order. At the end of each lesson, you will find a “Mark Complete” button at the bottom of the page. Once you have worked through all the lessons and marked them as complete, you will receive a course completion badge.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe why user-centered design and instructor autonomy are critical frameworks for designing shared curriculum.
  • Design curriculum elements (e.g., module level outcomes, activity or content introductions) that include specific spaces and guidance for instructors to incorporate their expertise and adapt content to their teaching context.
  • Develop instructor support materials (i.e., course maps and instructor manuals) that communicate adaptation opportunities and personalization strategies within curriculum constraints.
