Using Improvisation in Teaching

Teaching is generally a planned activity but there are always moments where things go awry. Improvisation techniques can help us feel prepared for the unprepared and help students to engage more actively and collaboratively in the learning process.

This course has been developed with Dr Richard Bale from Imperial College London, UK and includes short videos, activities and discussion prompts. When completed you will:

  • Know how to use improvisation techniques from theatre to help you feel more prepared for the ‘unprepared’ moments in your teaching.
  • Understand how using improvisation in your teaching can help students to engage more actively and collaboratively in the learning process.
  • Have an understanding of how to effectively use games, activities and icebreakers in your teaching, drawing on the expertise of improv coaches.
