Hi there. I’m Niya Bond, the faculty developer here at OneHE, and I’m absolutely delighted today to be joining you on a journey into artificial intelligence in teaching and learning. Now, I’ll be honest with you, two years ago, if someone had told me I’d be creating a course about AI in education, I might have laughed or even given a little bit of a side eye. Like many of you, I was a little bit skeptical, maybe a little bit intimidated and/or even turned off by AI. But here’s what changed my mind. I started to see how this tool, like many other tools that have passed through higher education and all education systems, could serve as collaborative partners in the work that we already do as educators. And really, I started thinking about it in the way of we are not replacing educators with these tools and technology. We’re talking about enhancing our approaches in intentional, carefully considered and evidence-based ways that prioritize the human teaching learning interactions.

So in this course, we’ll explore how generative AI can become a thoughtful collaborator in your teaching practices. One that can say help you brainstorm ideas, generate multiple perspectives, and even support your creative process as a human educator. We’ll look at practical tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and more, and even more importantly, we’re gonna talk about how to use these tools thoughtfully and effectively. So here’s my promise to you. This course isn’t about turning you into a text expert overnight, and it’s not even about convincing you to use AI in your teaching. It’s about showing you the ways that AI can support and enhance what you already do brilliantly, which is teach, inspire and connect with your learners, and then let you intentionally and carefully decide if you wanna integrate it into your practice and your broader philosophy. So grab a cup of coffee, or in my case it would be tea. Get comfortable and join me for an exploration of the possibilities and potential of AI in teaching and learning. The hope is that by the end of this course, you’ll have at least three new ideas that you’re excited to try or at least think about trying and can even report back to your community on. Let’s get to it.

Artificial intelligence is transforming higher education, with generative AI tools like ChatGPT becoming increasingly prevalent in academic environments. This course provides a practical introduction to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) specifically designed for educators who are new to these technologies. You’ll learn foundational concepts, gain hands-on experience with different AI chatbots, and discover concrete ways to integrate GenAI into your teaching practice to enhance both your productivity and student learning experiences. Through guided exploration and practical application, you’ll develop the confidence and skills needed to thoughtfully incorporate GenAI tools into your educational context.

“Start where you are, use what feels appropriate to your context, and build gradually. The goal isn’t to transform your teaching overnight – it’s to explore how these tools might support and enhance the excellent work you’re already doing.

Get Involved And Share Your Learning

  • Share your perspective. Throughout this course, you will see discussion prompts at the end of each lesson inviting you to share your thoughts and experience. • Ask a question. You can ask questions of experts and other educators in the discussion threads in courses.
  • Pick up your course badges. To earn your Course Completion Badges make sure you mark all lessons as ‘Mark Complete’ once you have completed a lesson. At the end of the course, click ‘Mark Complete’ and you will be asked a few multiple-choice questions to earn a Course Completion badge. Once you’ve had a chance to apply your learning, come back to complete an Impact Badges by applying what you have learned in the courses and answering a short survey.
