    Accessibility: Auditory
    Duration: 5-30 mins
    Student preparation: None
    Educator preparation: Minimal

    ACTIVITY PURPOSE

This activity is inspired by Renee Hobbs, Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island, USA. It is a great warm-up activity that helps to build close connections between students.

    USEFUL FOR

This activity can be used at the beginning of the semester or to start off a class, to help students get to know each other more deeply than the usual intro questions we ask. Participants choose which question(s) to answer in small groups, and can go several rounds with the same or different partner(s).

    PREPARATION

You can use the existing list of questions or select from them your favourite 5 or 6 for each round.

    INSTRUCTIONS

Break students up into pairs or small groups and invite each of them to respond to one of the prompts below, you can also select from a full list of prompts.

    • Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
    • Would you like to be famous? In what way?
    • If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?
    • If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?
    • What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?
    • Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.

    DURATION

About 8 or 10 minutes for a pair in one round, or 12-15 minutes in a trio.

    ADAPTATIONS AND EXAMPLES

You can do this in pairs or trios, you can do it synchronously with breakout rooms, asynchronously on a discussion board or, something like Slack or MS Team text. You can do one round or multiple rounds in one session, or you can do a different set of questions each class meeting.

    TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Breakout rooms if synchronous. Ability to create groups on a discussion forum if using a Learning Management System or Virtual Learning Environment.

    Manage and grow your hub

    What is a hub?

A Hub brings together content curated for you by your institution or group facilitator, community discussion, and opportunities to share with peers. Read the guidance below to learn how to navigate and make the most of OneHE, with this Hub as your anchor point.

This Hub is a private space for Hub guidance in OneHE.
Choose a Pathway to get started

From the hub page, select one of the curated pathways to get started. Pathways explore a focused topic area aligned with your institution or group’s priorities.

Each pathway guides you through short, practical learning designed to build confidence and momentum. You’ll find:

    • Short courses (around 20 minutes)
    • Resources and activities
    • Webinar recordings
    • Explorer Badges — themed collections of short courses and resources that introduce key ideas in a structured way

Some pathways are designed to be completed in full. Others allow you to focus on the areas most relevant to your goals.

Learn in a way that works for you

Courses are available on demand, so you can learn at a time that suits you. OneHE’s courses and resources are designed to be short, practical, and impactful – most take just 20 minutes to complete and provide immediate strategies you can apply in your teaching.

Depending on your institution’s (or group’s) guidance, you may be encouraged to complete an entire pathway — or you may choose to explore specific topics, attend live OneHE webinars, or browse the full course and resource library.

Access learning via the OneHE mobile app (Google Play or Apple Store).

Join the conversation in your member area

Your hub has a private member area for your institution or group. Use this space to:

    • Ask questions
    • Share insights
    • Connect with colleagues

Use the Discussions tab for structured conversations, or the Live Feed for quick updates and more informal questions.

    Earn recognition with badges

When you complete courses or Explorer Badges, you’ll earn digital badges or certificates to recognise your learning.

You can view your achievements anytime in the Badges & Achievements page.
