Key messages to take away

First Year Experience (FYE) and Student Success programmes provide a scaffolding that guides new students through the transition and “teaches them to fish” – develop themselves – such that they emerge with knowledge, skill, and metacognition that they can implement as they continue through their educational experience and beyond into the workplace.

FYE and Student Success programmes need to be customised to the specific gaps of an institution’s student population. Those designing the experience should take the demographics and particular challenges of their students into consideration when choosing course format, curriculum and materials, and supplemental programming.

FYE and Student Success programmes connect people. The more students feel connected with other students, faculty, and staff, the more engaged they are likely to be, and the more they persist. Programming and curriculum should be designed to connect students with others and strengthen the bond they feel with the institution.
