Introducing First Year Experience programmes

A generation ago, it became clear that a large percentage of students entering higher education were struggling to transition effectively to the college/university environment. Societal shifts, ever-faster technological changes, and other factors were combining to drive decreasing rates of retention and persistence.

Many higher education institutions, wanting to improve support for student persistence and increase retention and completion, created, and implemented First Year Experience or Student Success programming, largely for first year students (although some institutions extended programming to other years and/or transfer students).

This programming generally focuses on student self-discovery, study, and self-management skills, navigating college culture, connecting students with useful personnel and resources, and goal-setting both for college and career.

Implementation varies, with the most common being a course, often academic credit-bearing, that students complete in their first (or first transfer) semester. The course is often complemented by wraparound services and experiences that facilitate the transition.

In this course, we will explore the common themes that underpin successful First Year Experience programmes.
